Taiwan Region Leaders Reflect on Soroptimist, Service and Why They Give
Ling-Lang Tsai and Mei-Chih Fu (both of SI/Taiwan Province) joined Soroptimist when Taiwan Region first formed in 1992. They have a long and rich history of service and dedication to Soroptimist that has spanned three decades.
Ling-Lang served as the founding Governor of Taiwan Region from 1996 to 1998, then later served on the SIA Board of Directors from 2001 to 2002. Mei-Chih served on the board from 2012 to 2014, and most recently served as the Taiwan Country Manager for the Dream Big Campaign. Both women have held various region-level positions over the years, and both are strong advocates for mission-focused fundraising, including the Dream Big Campaign.
Ling-Lang and Mei-Chih shared some fascinating details about Taiwan Region, their experience as members and why they’ve chosen to support the Dream Big Campaign.
How did you become involved with Soroptimist?
Ling-Lang: Soroptimist was first introduced in Taiwan by Japan Minami Region in 1992, and at the time, was named after the orchid flower. There is an ancient story in our country about Mulan who joined the army instead of her father. She is not only a hero among women, but a model of loyalty and respect for one’s elders. She represents the characteristics of our Soroptimist sisters who have blossomed like orchids over the past 30 years. They are a strong source of support and joy for me.
What inspires you most about the work of Soroptimist, and why do you donate towards the Dream Programs?
Mei-Chih: I am inspired by Soroptimist’s mission and goals. We are women helping women, supporting vulnerable women and girls and helping them with their education. I’ve been a donor since I first joined Soroptimist, as I believe in creating educational opportunities for women and girls in need to help them achieve economic empowerment. I hope that our love knows no borders and that we can come together to support those in need.
What would you say to someone who is considering giving a gift to the Dream Big Campaign?
Ling-Lang: Your kind donation will help to open windows of opportunity for women and girls as we work towards our goal of investing in a half million dreams by 2031. Let us join hands and continue to advocate for women and girls around the world!
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Mei-Chih: When our Big Goal of investing in a half million women and girls by 2031 was launched, Taiwan Region immediately responded and began a four-year fundraising campaign called, “Save a Cup of Coffee–Small Donation for the Dream Big Campaign.” We thank all our members for their support through this campaign, which has allowed us to provide over $100,000 in support. Additionally, we would like to thank our 12 Soroptimist sisters who gave in total $30,000 in contributions. Thank you to all!
